virus symptoms ?

I am running a cobbled system:

Jetway V266B MB
Athlon 1800+ processor
western digital 60 gb hd
win 2k pro sp1
Ati Radeon 7200 Graphics
Adaptec Ultra Scsi PCI
Network Everywhere 10/100 PCI
Generic 56k winmodem PCI

Now, all my problems started with the introduction of this blasted blaster worm into my system. I got the worm, deleted the exec, modified the registry, in short, i killed the virus. I then went to install the wonderful microsoft patch, but realized that sp1 was not high enough to accept the patch, so after a painful 8 hours or so i had sp2 and the patch was installed. That was when all the trouble started. I began getting random reboots on the system. They would come during times of full and no cpu usage. I did just install a new memory chip before i got the virus, 256 ddr 266mhz, but i was running the system fine for a week with the new memory before the virus. I checked the error logs, made sure the computer would not reboot on errors and turned it on hoping for the best, ten minutes in or so, while i am online i am sad to hear 'click' and see the computer rebooting. This time though, a message informs me that the memory is being dumped and windows refuses to start. So, i whacked the system. I repartitioned with fdisk, reformatted and wrote zeros. I boot the system up to install win 2k again, 'click', reboots before it even reads the cd. so, i took out the new memory, seems to maybe have fixed the rebooting problem, but now i can't get windows to install without file transfer errors, and sometimes during reboot i can't even get a monitor display, is it possible i have too many cards and need to strip the system down for the reinstall ? Or are these virus symptoms, or maybe i just pressed too hard installing the memory and separated some layers in the MB? Any and all tips would be a great help for this possesed computer. (would it offend or help anyone if i mentioned that i am pretty sure the computer is a female ? )

Welcome to the forum!

What about maybe resetting the bios and starting from scratch with just a vid card, one stick of ram, hard drive...a MINIMAL setup....and try windows install like that.

oh, and.."virus symptoms" after you fdisk and format??? uhh, no. lol. Unless there are such things as BIOS viruses....cuz after you format you wipe out whatever is on the drive, virus and all.

You know.....the solution sounds so simple when you put it like that Now why didn't i think of that ? And because you are unsure, there are such things as bios viruses, they are old, and most bioses now are protected from them, but they do exist, and can wreak wicked havoc on systems ( i've had to hotswap bios chips to flash chips killed by viruses ) thanks for the help

Well, one trick to troubleshooting is to definitely LIMIT the possibilities...or rather, limit the amount of stuff that could be wrong..take out as much as you can from the equation..if the one stick of ram, vid card, hard drive wont boot...then you have limited the problem down seriously.
