My 2500+ overclocking *first job*

I'm using a retail 2500+ on an Asus A7N8X Deluxe mobo, and was screwing around in the BIOS yesterday when I finally decided to try to change the multiplier. From what I've heard, some mobos expose the multiplier for changing but you can't actually change it, it just reverts back to 11x. So I gave it a shot, and put my 333mhz FSB AthlonXP on an 11.5x multipler and rebooted. It stuck! The System Properties said I had a 1.91Ghz Athlon. Cool! So I ran 3DMark2001SE to check for stability problems and to get a benchmark, and it went fine. So I bumped the multiplier up 2 more times with a full 3DMark run between each OC, and so now Windows says I'm using a 2800+. Yay for me, hehe. BTW: I'm running at stock voltages, I don't think I need to bump them up unless I need to push the CPU any higher.

I'm not going to push it any higher until other people give me their overclocking experiences. I was just suprised to find my CPU unlocked from the start. My cooler is a Coolermaster X-Dream with fan at full speed. The benchmarks are as follows:

Stock 1.83 - 12110
CPU 1.91Ghz - 12360
CPU 2.00Ghz - 12528
CPU 2.08Ghz - 12717

Oh, and I also overclocked my Ti 4200 128mb to 300/545 (That's a Ti 4600-level core and TI 4400-level memory), and these scores are wth the overclock in place.

My next plan is to push my FSB to 400mhz to match my DDR, but keep the CPU speed the same. Any suggestions?

Cool, do you think Stock Heatsink on a Barton 2500 would reach to the 2800+ level?

MaximumPC magazine's Lean Machine for this year was running at 2.1 something Ghz with the stock cooler. They still had the bus at 333mhz, though, which is unfourtunate because my Ti 4500 (that's what I'm calling my video card from now on) and 2800+ on a 400Mhz FSB will p0wnz0rz their "preppy machine".

That's your nForce2 board in action... most, if not all, nForce boards unlock the multipliers for you

Wouldn't it make more sense to put the FSB up to 400 first and then up the multiplier a bit at a time till you find the sweet spot? You'd get more bang for the buck with a higher FSB and lower clock than with a higher clock and lower FSB.

My 2500+ won't accept multipliers above 12.5x, so I set it up at 12.5 and the FSB up to 179 and i'm running at 2.25GHz with no problems... Full load temps get up to about 48C with a Volcano 7+ at medium... Just wish I had PC3200 memory so I could run it at 200 fsb... I can't do that with my PC2700 unless I go to CAS2.5 (currenlty running at CAS2)

Cool, thanks JohnE. I wasn't aware of that. Once I have some xtra time to benchmark things, I'll raise the FSB and lower the multiplier.

ramon you would get faster running a higher fsb i reckon anyway, making the cas lat 2.5 wouldnt make too much a diff i dont reckon..
