Kids cant renew ip/ghost image

just curious. i just restored my laptop with an XP ghost image i made a while back. it was up working fine, web browsing and what not. . i realized i had put a static i.p on it and wanted to set it back to dhcp but no matter what i do, i cant get a new ip from my linksys router. my other mandrake and Xp boxes have no problems. i can ping the loopback address on the laptop without a problem.

i just switched the cable AND port on the hub which goes into my router. still no dice. i have removed the network adapter in device manager, tcp/ip, tried the repair option(which has NEVER worked anyhow) you name it. i know there is an issue with the novell client and doing ghost images because i ran into this a while back at an old job but im not running novell.

i just put the static ip back on it and of course i can get out to the web but as soon as i set it back to dhcp, well you know the story.

thought it mighta been the onboad LAN but it doesnt seem like it.
any thoughts? i could do a reinstall and not think twice but not
yet......

also, it seems like the network connection i use it local area connection 2 instead of 1, but i dont think that should matter.

edit: forgot to mention command line stuff is no good as well I.E. ipconfig /release OR /renew. i basically have all 0's for the i.p. as its already released.

I'm not exactly sure what the problem is, but could you do a ipconfig /all both before and after you switch from Static IP to DHCP and post it up here?

Thanks...

I'll try to help you any way I can!

Finance

dont think that will help but ill tell you this much:

when i set the static i.p. it has the ip address i give it @

192.168.1.5 and my 2 DNS servers as well. this works just fine.

when i use DHCP, ipconfig /all shows me i have DHCP and autoconfiguration enabled, with zero's for the ip,subnet, and dhcp server. i wish i could leave the damn static ip but i connect to the internet through the lan at my job and would have to change it back to dhcp.

Well, did you go to the properties of your network connection and select "TCP/IP", click "Advanced". Then type in the IP Address of your gateway/DHCP server. Make sure it's in there. If you know your metric, go ahead and type that in there, if not, leave the "Automatic metric" box checked.

Also, make sure on the properties dialog box, that "Obtain an IP address automatically" and Obtain DNS server automatically" are ticked.

Then try it again, if still no joy:

Type in the address for both of your DNS servers, and leave the "Obtain IP address automatically" circle ticked.

Then try again.

Hope it goes well for you!

this worked for me and i know it was the ghost image which was the problem. now i know not to do images with static ip's. or if i had too many amstel's and forgot, i know how to fix it.
