What operating system are you running? That way we can give you the instructions.

Thanks,
Sean

It also depends if you're on DHCP or static...

Is this a local IP or a ISP IP!?

NEED INFO!

(Obviously OS is good too)

hum assuming you mean outside ip and you dont have a static ip then simply reconnecting to your isp (cycle your connection device) should get you a new ip. i wont ask why you need to change your outside ip

With my ISP I get a new one every time I change the device (NIC) connected to my modem.

If you have a router:
Go into the router DHCP settings. Hit release IP, hit renew IP.

If you are connected directly to the internet:
Open the DOS prompt and type "ipconfig /release" then type "ipconfig /renew"

Now you're good to go

Normal lan ip address change routine->

Start->Settings->Network and Dial-up connections
Right click on local area network connection, select properties.
Select the tcp/ip protocol and click properties.
There you can define ip, subnet, gateway and dns servers.

What if he doesn't want to assign it himself and he wants it to auto detect?

Click on dhcp assigned ip instead of static?
It's the radio button above statically assigned ip and dns.

Thanks so much for the info, I too needed to know how to change my ip address. but, I go though a router. I tried this while going though the modem drectly, and it worked, but since there are other computers in this house, I just can't pull the plug on them for something like that. so....could you pleae tell me where the router DHCP settings are?

thank you so much!
