Failed hard drive transplant

As the subject line says it didn`t work. I tried the " delete the enum key" on a Win ME drive and installed the new mobo drivers causing it to lock up on a black screen with a flashing cursor.
I have subsequently installed a new drive with a fresh W2K install with the old drive as a slave. I can find the program files i want to access but creating new shortcuts doesn`t work. I would like to transfer these files from the old drive to the new. I have searched the archives and there`s nothing that specifically says how to transfer.
If you have an answer, be as specific as possible. My new drive is a Maxtor...the old is about a 6 month old WD..both 40gig.
Thanks

So, you can see the files you want to copy.... is there any reason you cannot just drag and drop them from the slave drive to whereever you want them on the master drive?

Are you trying to run the programs that were on the old drive?

If so, you'll need to reinstall them under Windows 2000. You can't run most programs (especially Windows programs) unless they are installed under the operating system you are using.

Yes, I want to run them and I would leave them on my F drive if they would run from there but new shortcuts don`t work. These are bussiness programs that contain files taht I need to access.
So if I install on my C drive I might be able to drag the info files to those programs?
...Or, maybe, if I install the programs on my c drive(the new one) then the shortcuts will work to the old??/ I`m grasping at straws here......

Ok lets see if we can explain this: Your programs and applications like your word processor and spreadsheets and games etc. cannot successfully be transfered to your C: drive or run from F: drive. Things like this must be freshly installed so that the registry on your new OS is correctly created to run them. So, you have to have the applications on CD or floppy and reinstall them.

The data files (Data files meaning pictures, word processing documents, Excel, mp3s etc etc.) that were created by these programs can be salvaged from the old drive and when you install the applications on your new OS the files will all be accessable, you should lose nothing with any luck.

If I were you I would copy all of your data files from the old F: drive to your new C:, and then partition/reformat your old drive and set it up correctly to be a storage drive. I can explain how to do that if you ask.

To copy and save data files using the Drag and Drop method is very simple... bet you've done it before in related ways.
You can transfer the files to any folder or create a new folder on your C: to move/copy the files to. For ease here I am going to suggest that you use the My Documents folder for now.
If you have the My Documents icon on your desktop just double click on it to open it.
Next, right click on "My Computer" then "Explore" then select your 2nd HD which you say is F: and open it. It will open in a separate window from My Documents. You can resize both windows so they can both be seen simultaniously on your screen.
Now simply browse around your F: drive and find data files you want to save. (You might want to clump then up and drag and drop a bunch at a time so you are not moving files one at a time.) Simply L click on the files you want to move and keep the button pressed, the file(s)will be highlighted, keeping the L button depressed drag the icon from its location on F: to the My Documents folder and let up on the button.
You have just "drag and dropped" the file and it will be copied to the My Documents folder on C:
When you have salvaged everything from the F: drive you can then partition/reformat your 2nd drive and set it up correctly as a storage drive and move all your files back and or have them on both drives as a backup method.

If you have any questions just ask.
