Baffling problem!

The short:

A neighbor had asked me to look at her computer "that had just started doing funny things", so as a neighbor I did.

She explained that she had tried to compose a word doc and "it just kept flipping through the pages."

I went into word and sure enough, as I was going to start a document the pages just started to scroll by; like a movie; without a single keystroke! Couldn't help myself for starting to laugh.

Anyway, W2k, sp4, sygate pers, avg.
I took a disk along w/proggies. Thought maybe a virus so I tried to install nod32. As I started to install, it immediately became a multiple install of unknown numbers...and then it froze. Forced a boot.

tried to access the the bay drives and it would either freeze or reboot on it's own. This went on for several hours but I did manage to get a few things done. Msblast scan negative. Applied w2k patch. ran latest nod; negative.

Now the lady claimed the only email she opened was a regular newsletter from work.

I can try a trojan scan yet, but I'm not certain I can trust the results of any scan since anything I've tried to install has 20+ copies running in the task mgr.

Any suggestions.... Probable reinstall!

Thanks

GB

Is the BIOS stable? Can you go into the BIOS and poke around without the machine rebooting?

Can you boot to a DOS prompt using a Win98 boot disk? If so, can you poke around the C: drive without rebooting?

Just trying to discern if it's a BIOS problem or not.

Have you had more than one keyboard on that thing?

Had similar symptoms on a wired keyboard with stuck key and a wireless keyboard that was connected but didnt work right until i re-established connection

Good luck
