Did I get hosed, is it a wash, or did I make out a little bit?
Hey guys.
My PNY GeForce4 4600Ti tanked a few weeks back, so I called up PNY and got an RMA replacement.
(PNY offers lifetime replacement on their cards)
So, yesterday I finally got the card back, they gave me a GeForce FX 5600 w/256MB. My question is what are your thoughts?
Please check these links and reply back! Ti4600 128MB FX5600 256MB
I read some reviews, some like Tom's, say the card (128MB version) is disappointing, but it should shine once DX9.0 gets into swing. Others sites says, it whoops butt short of a $500 card. What do you all think?
I just hope it staves off me buying a new card 'til next spring. I was planning in replacing the GeForce4 later this year... Otherwise is IS still sealed and I could just sell it here or on eBay.

I'd be pretty mad if I were you.
Still, it ought to last you 'til spring. Wouldn't have been so bad if it were a 5600 Ultra.

It'll last you until spring, but I can't believe they didn't give you a 5600 Ultra or a 5900, considering that you had the 4600 used-to-be-top-of-the-line card.

Hmmm. Yah. I don't know. I want to start gaming again. My present card is the onboard NVidia GF4MX w/ 32MB.
Ugh.
Should I press for an exact replacement?
I can see their point, PNY thinking that they both retail for the same amount now (roughly) and the 5600 has double the memory and DX9.0 capabilities....
Or sell?

Ya should have gotten the Ultra version and forget the extra 128 megs of ram. And if you did get the Ultra, you want the new revision that makes it on par with the Radeon 9600 Pro. However, PNY tried to make you happy by giving you a replacement and giving you something better than the ti4600, you have to say, they tried. They should have asked you if you wanted the 5900 Ultra and pay a little more for it.

Options would be the key word when I called them (which I would).
IMO the trade-off was to there advantage.
I can't believe that they don't have any 4600 cards either new or refurbed to send you. I see them pop up at Neweggs refurbed section quite often so they must still have some.
I really like nvidia but there newest offerings are dissapointing.
Personally i'll be waiting for there offerings after the FX series.

The 5900 Ultra is twice the amount that my 9800 costs, and i can flash the 9800 to a pro and over clock it some more... for £200. £400 for a graphics card? Nah, your alright.
I agree, they should still have some 4600's in stock...

Yah, , well, I assumed that since they still sell the 4600 and it is on their website, that I'd get one, when I called to replace it.
I mean, some (like Tom's Hardware) reviews were diasappointed with the 5600 series (as I said that at the beginning) because it was not better than the 4600, so why buy it?
But qualitatively speaking, this card's performance seems to be within the 10% range of the 4600. I would be upset if I did 'upgrade' from my 4600Ti with my own moola and paid full price. But I did not.
This was a replacement RMA on card that I have had since May 2002.
I just wanted to get a general concensus, on whether or not it was it was a hosing, or one of those 'it's in the ballpark' thingies. Because I have seen some benchmarks (FutureMark03 and DX9 benches), that have the 5600 beating out my old card. You know get the feel before I *do* crack the shrink-wrapped package open and install...
