AMD is great, but dont buy the 3200+ over the P4 3.2C. The 3200+ is slower and its also more expensive, only go with AMD if your getting anything lower then a Athlon XP 2800+.

If you go with a Athlon, get a Nforce 2 board. I reccomend a Asus A7N2 or a MSI K7N2.

If you go with Intel, get the MSI 875P NEO or the Asus P4C800.

As far as Compatibility, hardware usually never has CPU compatibility issues.

I was thinking of buying the 2500+ barton, it seems cheap for the time. How would that be for gaming? and how hard is it for a newbie to OC?

The Barton 2500 overclocks very well, I am not sure if its multiplyers are unlocked or not but it will do you fine.

Well the deluxe versons have cool stuff like serial ata raid duel lan cool extras. Alsot the a7n8x-x is the ghetto one of the group. Not even dual channel.
