XP-runs in safe mode, but won't boot up normally???????????????
I just loaded XP Pro onto an older Pentium II.
It does run in the safe mode, but I can't get it to boot up and run normally. When I try, I get the XP logo with the bar that shows it is loading. That lasts a few sec's and then the screen goes blank.
Anyone have any ideas?

Have you tried putting in or swapping out the video card?
This is from a previous post:
"I just bought a new video card, a TI4200, and it worked great. Started playing games on it (Nephew) and after two weeks, everything seemed to sllooowww down. Swapped out the video card with a generic TNT2 and worked great (for the TNT2), turned out the card slowly went bad."
The computer did just what you said yours is doing. Only difference is that later on, it wouldn't even go to windows, it would just continue to restart.

I also want to second this. Start with the video card, and its drivers. (Uninstall the drivers in safe mode if possible).
If that is not the cure...
Start with going into Safe Mode and checking the drivers.
If possible disconnect or remove any unneeded hardware from the system. Printers and such mostly, but also sound and modems...
Now that the system is stripped down try booting into normal from the "F8" menu, rather than the default boot.
If that still fails, then with the system still stripped down try reinstalling.
Other problems:
Is this a fresh install? (If it is an update, then please start over and install fresh. Please?)
Is this a dual boot? (Try booting into the other OS and checking the boot loader.)
Have you been able to run XP on this system before? (Maybe there is not enough memory or processor speed for the XP system to run? A PII 333 with 128 megs RAM with an * meg video card has run XP nicely for me in the past)
PS: Let us know what is going on, PLEASE?

Get to the boot menu by tapping f8 key before windows starts to load. Once there select "enable vga mode"

More info...
Pentium II
233 mhz
278 meg's of RAM
6 gig HD (primary)....reformatted and loaded with XP Pro (twice)
2 gig HD (secondary)....not yet reformatted and it does contain
windows 95. All signs show this isn't an issue as the only operating system found is XP.
In the safe mode, I ran "enable vga mode", and that worked. However, when I went back to a normal boot, it did not work any more.
Don't know if I can uninstall my video drivers in the safe mode. Will try that tonight.
I'm guessing my video card isn't compatible with XP Pro...?????

If this is a non-Intel motherboard, you may need special drivers for the chipset, also if you have another vidcard handy try it.

Still working on this.
How do you uninstall the video drivers. I'm far from being very good at this kind of thing. Since this PC isn't yet connected to the internet, I can't check to see if there is a better driver available.

Yo I had the exact same problem when I built this comp
I had to get in and install the video drivers in safe mode then restart and it worked for me. Don't remember if I had to do anything else but I think that is all it was......

try going to the my computer properties and clicking on the device manager....then go to display adapters and right click on your graphics card then go to properties and click on drivers and uninstall. That should do it :0)
