Try (temporarily) reducing your MTU settings. Although I'm on aDSL via PPPoE and the "optimum" MTU is 1492, sometimes this has to be reduced to 1440, 1420 or even 1400 to eliminate "lag."

Dr TCP is a good, simple, free tool to do this with. Get it at http://www.dslreports.com/front/drtcp.html

It may well be due to a worm/virus traffic, however, it only takes a moment to try a lower MTU setting and see what happens. If no improvement at, say 1400, then return to the original setting. You have nothing to lose by trying. Otherwise, you can sit and do nothing until worm traffic clears up, IF that is the cause.

Could it really be worm traffic? My internet connection slowed down tonight and, apparently, many others also. My friends in other cities are also experiencing slowing in their cable or DSL connections.

Absolutely! Folks in my area are seeing slower traffic as well...and we're all on 3mbps cable.
