faster CPU speed

I don't know that much about "overclocking", nor do I know what it means... but I heard from a friend that when you buy your computer and it says 2.8 Ghz, that it really isn't running at 2.8 Ghz, that's just the "max" it can run at.

Is this true? And if so how do I get my 2.8 GHz CPU chip to actually run at this speed?

I don't know if you need the comp info but here it is:
PIV 2.8 GHz
1024 MB RAM
nVidia Geforce4 Titanium 4800se
WinXp Home

That's about all i know except harddrive capactiy which i highly doubt has anything to do with my question.

Any help with this would be much appreciated!

Thanks,
FireWolf

Well , I'm sorry to say but your friend is wrong. If yours is a 2.8 p4 then thats what it's running at ...2.8. When something is overclocked , means that it is running faster than when it came out stock. Maybe one of the more experienced members here can explain it better. I'm not too good with getting the right words out. :-)

You got it cruiserlck, 2.8ghz is the CPU's stock speed, what it is made to run at, overclocking is when you raise it. Overclocking creates more heat and can cause instability.
