Dell Power Supply

Hi people, I have a question and don't want to sound too dumb...

I am doing an upgrade from a Dell P3 600 to a AMD xp2500+.

The exsisting mobo and case are not standard, for example I have had to drill holes in the mobo tray for the risers etc for the new mobo.

Now the problem is, the power supply in this thing does not look like a standard ATX. It has the standard looking ATX monoblock connector, but it also has a smaller one with 6 connectors that sits next to it. It also looks a bit bigger than the standard ATX psu's that I have worked with. The psu model number is PS-5201-7D.

I know that you should never go by wire colour, but the ATX monoblock connector is all red and black with 1 yellow cable and 1 grey cable, the smaller connector has 5 blues and 1 green.

I have got a ECS L7VTA mobo and don't want to blow it by throwing the wrong voltages into it etc.

As I don't do Intel only AMD, I am not sure of the power requirements of the Intel mobo's and whether they need the smaller connector or a slightly different psu. Most of the machines I build have the smaller connectors coming from the psu, but I have never had to use them.

So, will the psu work? or is it likely to blow the living crap out of this new mobo?

Any help would be great.

Thanks in advance...

Some one on e-bay is selling that exact PS:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...category=42018

Its only rated at 200Watts. Since it claims to be an atx I would imagine it would work with an atx mobo. (i.e. pin for pin compatible).

Thanks meese.

Yeah, I would have thought it would work, trouble is everything in this bloody dell is non standard. No reason for thinking the psu wouldn't be as well.

Oh well, got two chances... Yeh or Ney.

200 watt enough? Only got a MX440, 15gig HDD and a 30x CDROM with a 2.5 Barton, 512 PC3200 DDR.

Thanks again...

some power supplies from dell are non standard. there is an adapter available to make it work with a standard motherboard. someone posted a link about it before. i tried to search for it but cannot get that function to work right now. perhaps it will be available later

a 200 watt power supply might work fine in a dell box since they have total control over the manufacturing process. it may in fact be enough for your machine but i think most people here would recommend that you go with at least the minimum that AMD recommends for your processor.

edited for spelling

Thanks Kendo, I will give it a try and see what happens.

200 watt is a little low, but I am trying to do this on a budget as I have spent far too much this year already (£4,500) on computer equipment and the wife aint happy.

Cant see a psu labeled as an ATX not working with an ATX mobo.

Well, if it does blow the mobo, I will rma it and plead ignorance.

Thanks again.

Ah, thanks Kendo.

Looks like I will have to bite the bullet and get a new psu.

Can't get one of these adapters in the uk (that I can find at least) and even if I did, they are probably just as axpensive as a cheap psu.

Yet another reason why I HATE Dell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks again.

Dude, I'm NOT getting a Dell.

Thanks for the quick replies. So I wasn't going dinky-dau after all.
