Kids linux or xp

i've been told that on my new system i should install linux rather than xp because it's cheaper and also because i can use win98 on top of the linux if i really need microsoft programs. Any suggestions? also heard that xp can't be bootlegged, true?

have you ever used linux?

if no then i wouldnt install it as a main operating system. you could dual boot winxp and linux so if you want to play around with linux you can with a simple reboot

linux is nice but if you never used it, you will be completely lost espically if you used windows your whole life. Also if your into gaming linux gaming support is still in the works.

if you can get a legal copy of winxp i say go for it.

as for bootlegging winxp it is possible even with the black keys listed from service pack 1.

If you've never used Linux, don't do it. There are ways to run Windows programs on Linux, but they're not perfect. Also, it is a completley different OS. I'd try it and learn a bit about it before you dedicate a computer to it. There's lots of good things about linux, but it isn't totally compatible with Windows. If you know Linux, and think you will be happy using it exclusivley (like me) then by all means install it. If you're gaming or want MS Office though, use XP. There ARE ways of bootlegging it, but don't discuss them here.

Yea what SKYLINEGTR33MWJ said. ^ ^ ^ ^

Linux can be downloaded for free. Give it a shot cause I think you'll like it. Very stable and not that hard to use. You'll also feel the sense of occomplishment of learning a new OS.

Dual boot like GZ3 said until you have time to get your feet wet. Head over to www.linuxiso.org to download Linux or www.cheapbytes.com to order a copy for like $7.00us. I'd recommend Mandrake or Redhat to start with.

ya Gotta start SOMEWHERE

Its up to you, if you're up for a challenge and love to learn how things work Linux is an awesome OS. It IS more of a challenge than XP because XP hides 95% of what is really going on.

No point in turning this into yet another OS challenge thread as there are already a gazillion of them.. but if you're a heavy gamer stick with XP and maybe install Linux on the side to toy with until you're more comfortable with it

You could always give Linux a try and then purchase XP later if you don't like it. Keep 98 until you make up your mind.

I am a Windows person and yet I tried Linux. You never know until you try. If you don't like it, do what I did and trash it.

to be honest, u know why is the only reason i tried linux. Becuz i was soooo obsessed with "tweaking" and "modifying" my desktop. I installed Window Blinds, Desktop X, Litestep, Cursor XP, Icon Pakager... and amazing wallpapers, only to have all this slow my computer down and make it extremely unstable.

one day, i came across, linux. and saw "kde screenshots" i was like NOOOOO way. if linux loooks that cool, im down. so downloaded the 3 ISO's..... and burned them and installed them. and i dont ever regret it. linux is like the best system there is so far. and best of all........ its 100% free.

but its true what vass0922 said. if you like challenges, and love to learn..... love to take things apart and put them back together. try linux. if you are more of a "hardcore" gamer using windows for "non-productive" reasons... the dont try it.

Linux is not for every-one!
