how to get the most out of onboard video?

I have an old celery system that's just being used for surfing and basic M$ office apps. it's a 533 with 256mb pc100 ram. Just wondering, is there anyway to tweak the onboard video on the motherboard to get the most out of it? Isn't it true that if you add more ram, then more memory will be allocated to the onboard video? it's an i810 intel chipset btw. Also, it's an hp pavilion 6636, and I don't ever plan on using it for gaming at all.
Thanks!

yes some motherboards when you add ram you can go into the bios and change the amount of ram the video will use.

Just a heads up dont think that giving it 64 megs of ram or 128 will make it run like a gforce 4 or something tho

also keep up with the video driver updates, my step sister has the same onboard video, i updated the video from windows update and it made a lot of difference in half life

Not a great deal you can do with it rather than overclock the FSB, and I doubt that would do much for you. The 810 isn't exactly a gaming platform, but supports primitives, so maybe a bit more RAM could help if you increase the amount allocated to the video, but not much.

The 810 chipset dynamically sets the amount of ram allocated for the video. It boots at 1mb and then will adjust it up to a max of 11mb. I don't believe you can change it manually.

Well, you might want to consider throwing in a PCI Matrox G450. It'll give you excellent (probably the best) 2D quality and leave all your ram for the system. There's not realy a whole lot you can do with onboard graphics.

So when you're not gaming, what are you trying to achieve then? i810 VGA implementation is exactly like an AGP card with no dedicated memory at all, dynamically borrowing as much RAM as it needs. So there's nothing you can do. (Yes it's fairly limited even in its 2D resolution and color depth support.)
