Connect desktop to a laptop

Okay the following situation:

My gf's laptop is an intel celeron running windows 98 se in german
My desktop computer is a p4 running winxp home edition in english.

I would like to connect the two computers, both have NIC's but I have never done this before.

What software needs to be installed on both machine to connect?
What should the settings be like?

Since I have never done this before, is anyone willing to write up a somewhat detailed set of instructions for me? Pretty please with sugar and nuts on top?

Thank you

to connect network card to network card all you need to do is have a cross over cable connecting both machines
