Reformat XP Without Restore Disc or XP CD

Hi,
A friend of mine has a new computer (Hewlett Packard) and he was not given a Restore CD or a Windows XP CD, what happens when he needs to reformat? Is it as simple as pressing F12 for setup (or whatever it is) that you see on screen at start up?

No, you need the restore Cds. Many years ago, HP used to put the restore image on a hidden partition and restoring was as easy as pressing one key.

But I think that's been stopped now.

well u said it was new so tell him to go back or call back the company that sold it to him asking for the CD's. they should at least give you the XP CD. seriously who sells a preinstalled system without an giving the customer the OS CD. I would get a refund if they didn't give me a CD. It's sort of like buying a car without the keys. you need at least the XP Cd so that can reformat XP

That's what I thought, however, the guy at the shop (he phoned several days after purchasing the computer) said that HP puts everything on his system (as you said) (which may explain why about 8Gb of his hard drive has been reserved), which either of us havnt a clue how to locate this "reserved" portion of his HD. I feel he has been burnt by the either HP or the shop.

I think that PC's nowadays that come with OS installed have a 'hidden' partiton somewhere on the hard disc - - - - -should you need to re-install you get it from there. As for formatting and re-installing, haven't got a clue there - - - am on w98se myself and will remain on that OS til this kind of thing gets resolved.
Just my 2 penneth.
