video card problems

hey everyone
Im having a prob with a pc im working on for someone...i just did a fresh install of win98se on a compaq 5838....
everything went fine but now when i go to install the 3dfx vodoo card, it wont remain the primary video card...when i restart the pc it goes back to a PCI vga display controller, i have to open my computer>properties>display adapters and delete the regular standard vga display adapter to have the vodoo take over, itll remain at the 800x600 display setting untill i shut it down and restart it, then it goes back to the standard pci display adapter....at 640x480...whats going on, ive never ran across this b4 and frankly its got me stumped...
any input is appreciated....

Are you saying you are trying to install a second video card, but the pci video card keeps reverting back to primary..?

...or are you talking about ONLY the voodoo card and it keeps reverting back to standard PCI Vga controller...?
If this is the case, instead of removing it...right click on the desktop and select Properties...click on the Settings tab, then click on Advanced, click on Adapter, then click on Change...when the Update Device Driver window comes up, click next, then select "Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location....then click next, click "Have Disk" ...and Im sure you know the rest...

Also, are you using the latest driver for this from Compaq? Here's the link just in case it's the old one...(I think the old one had a problem...)
http://www29.compaq.com/falco/sp_det...twareVer=12290

I am guessing that youve already tried this...Please just ignore me if Im telling you stuff you already know!!! Ü

Yes, what voodoo? Earlier voodoos were only 3d accelerators incapable of working alone (needed a 2d controller aside).

Well, there were cards like monster 5d which gave you 2d+3d on same cards, but for the most part, that's correct.
Is this a card that came with the compaq or did you buy it seperatley? try getting the latest drivers from voodoofiles or somewhere.

...or are you talking about ONLY the voodoo card and it keeps reverting back to standard PCI Vga controller...?
this is exactly what is happening....ill try your suggestion thoguh and see what happens...

And how the Hell do you get into the bios on these damn machines anyway...i cant seem to for the life of me

update, when i go to change it in the advance propeties tab...it says windows will now use the recommended drivers for this video card..."standard PCI video adapter" what is going on with this thing...man youd think they would make computer with SOME common sense considering what they can do these days it has the oem vodoo card in it and still isnt working...

Stant,
According to one of the "Experts" at the compaq forum, you should download and install this driver after a new win98 install.

Whether this will actually work or not, is an entirely different matter...

I would try it though, if youre only getting 640x480

Good luck! Vicki
