firmware is the software that runs on the hardware of the machine.
The OS doesn't talk directly to the mechanical arm moving around on the Hard drive.. it speaks to the firmware which in turn talks to the hardware.
How to update it is dependant on the hardware you're updating.
The general rule of thumb is with firmware is if it ain't broke don't fix it. A bad firmware update can bork hardware permanently
