Don't waste your time with the Opteron yet...it will be a long time before it's mainstream...and you can't even take advantage of it yet.

I'd say XP's man...they'll be around for a while, just get like a 2800, or whatever...still makes your comp cruise. Why waste the money on an opty? Youll still have to upgrade down the road with mem, mobo's, drives, etc...

The Computer world sucks....changes to fast...(personal opinion)

I wouldn't waste money on the Opteron. The Athlon's are pretty fast processors. I'd go for the Athlon.

I want to have this computer for at least 3 years. That is why im looking to spend the money to get an Opteron, though it costs about the same as a Athlon Xp 3200+ both w/motherboard.

Im also planning to pump 1GB of Crucial RAM, and a 120GB SATA drive and the works.....

Well I supose if you have the cash and want to do it, then an Opteron would work. But I have to agree, go for the XP definately. You'd be much better off saving the money now and upgrading later on down the road. Your comp will run more synchronized with the rest of the computer realm for a longer period of time.

Exhibit A: My dads computer. He has some sort of obession of buying the biggest and best computer (like 3000+ dollars) when he does get a new comp. However... Its great for a year, good for the 2nd year, and after that it just plain sucks.

I think you'll be better off saving your money now and upgrading later... just my opinion tho
