Accessing router...

EFAH05W - EhterFast 10/100 5-port Auto-Sensing Hub My friend has that and I'm trying to help him access it so he cant port forward, he is setting up a game server. How can he access it? Typing 192.168.1.1 into a browser doesn't work?

trying to access a hub?? Never heard of accessing a hub...you are thinking of accessing a router.

A hub automatically forwards everything.

A hub is dumb, it just sends whatever comes in on any port out on every port.

A switch is a little smarter, it sends out stuff based on the MAC address of where it is going...but it doesnt need programming, it just figures out the mac addresses itself. (some switches are called "manageable" where you can do some stuff lik eprogramming the switch ports, but we are talking about the high dollar cisco switches etc, not the home type)

A router is a little smarter still..it sends stuff based on the IP address....a router is the one that is programmable with port forwarding etc.

Now that I think about it, I believe you can't do that with a hub.

A Router yes.

My Dad though the kid was saying the wrong thing when he said it was a hub. But the kid typed in the product number at Linksys and was a hub. Does this mean he doesn't have the capabilities of port forwarding and needs to get a router instead of a hub?

Well a router and a hub are just two totally different things.

The only real reason that you need a router at home is when you have a cable internet connection....the "WAN" port of the router goes to the cable modem...the "LAN" ports...(usually 4 ports from the routers built in switch) go to your PC's. Basically your cable ISP gives you ONE IP address....your router takes that ONE IP address and then it gives out NEW IP addresses to all of the PC's that you hook up to it (usually up to 253 different PC's or so).

All a hub does is take whatever is one any input and send it to all the other outputs.

Tell us what you are trying to do and we can tell you what you need.

If he is trying to do online gaming he probably has a cable connection...in that case he can either hook one PC to the cable modem..in which case ALL of his gaming ports etc are opened...he can play all the games he wants to play but he is also wide open to hackers etc. Or he can get a router that blocks the ports that he doesnt manually open.

If he is just taking two or more PC's and making a little at home network with no internet access, the a hub will do fine.
