Hi all. I just want to run chkdsk and have it fix everything it finds. I would prefer it if it didn't ask me any questions i don't know the answers to. I searched the forum and saw info on /this and /that. How do I run this and what do I enter to do it right. i have only done it 3 times in a year, the first was with tech support and he had me do a lot of deleting and cleaning before chkdsk. please advise.I have win xp home edition. I got a blue screen on startup this morning strongly reccomending running chkdsk. It was only on for a minute and I missed most of it but did see the reference to chkdsk. Everything seems to be working fine. Thanks

The blue screen on startup was just running chkdisk because one of your hard disks wasn't unmounted properly (or you didn't shut down the right way) it doesn't mean there was a problem, it fixes it automatically.
To run chkdisk manually, go to my computer, right click your disk drive (probably C:\) and click properties, go to the tools tab and click the "Error Checking" button. It may say the disk is in use and to schedule it for the next boot, that's fine. It will probably just run through though. Be sure to shut down any other programs like servers, firewalls or Anti-Virus first, otherwise it won't get through it, and leave the computer alone while it runs it.

Thanks ulitimate member nukes. The blue screen on startup had writing on it.All I saw was we strongly recomend that you run chkdsk. I don't have to be online to do that right. you know disableing the security software and stuff. I got a lot of stuff down by the clock this all has to go to or just the firewall and anti virus. TIA

Do you mean "chkdsk" or "scandisk" ?

Chkdsk is an older thing I believe..scandisk is the newer thing.

go to the "run" menu...(click on the start menu, youll see "run") and type "scandisk".

Or go to start/programs/accesories/system tools/scandisk.

There is a check box for "automatically fix all errors" or something like that.

(I dont use XP a lot so hopefull this stuff still applies)
