Spontaneous Reboots Running NAV and Ad Aware

The comp I'm having problems with is an older system (AMD K62-450 in a Tyan Trinity MB; but still good as a homework machine!) running W2k, SP4. Recently, while running either Ad Aware 6.0 or Norton Anti Virus 2003 (not both at the same time), the comp reboots before finishing the scan. I've tried running both of the programs in Safe Mode, but the same thing happens. Does anyone have any ideas about how to troubleshoot this? Thanks.

Do you get a blue screen error, or does it just do a normal restart? You might have to turn off automatic reboot in windows settings to see what the error code actualy says.

Well if its doing an actual restart rather than just a blue screen/shutdown then ya, it probably could be the worm thats going around. Try disconnecting your computer to the internet (actualy unplug it) and then run a virus scanner

First things first, check for the msblast worm. If you don't see that then turn off automatic reboot(I'm not exactly sure how to get to it in win 2k, but in XP its Control Panel->System Advanced Tab, click settings under startup and recovery). Then check the blue screen error and come back and tell us what it is. Also update all your drivers and update your BIOS. I had the same problem with an antivirus prog (AVG). Also go into your BIOS and disable virus checking at boot (why? I don't know, but it seemed to work for me).

Thanks for the responses. There is no indication that my problem is related to the mblast worm (I downloaded the security patch in July). I didn't know about the automatic reboot setting (thanks VHockey86 and Arcuivie). That is now off and I get a blue screen with text that leads me to believe that I have a corrupted driver problem. I think I know where to go from here.
