Kids Maxtor hard drives

Maxtor hard drives…
Is anybody out there, who knows something about Maxtor problems lately?
First, I think Maxtor hdd are the best. I’m using Maxtor’s for years and never had a problem.
The warranty and the support is great, but…
All this happens in the last month or so.
The first hdd died at my mother-in-law computer, an old 3.5Gb built in 1996.
The next one in my server, 60Gb, 2 years old, Maxtor sent me a new one in a week’s time (Great).
My brother called me from Germany; his died, 40Gb, 2.5 years old.
Today, my wife’s Maxtor died on the spot, after making grinding and clicking noise. 20Gb, 2 years old.
The 20 and 60Gb hdd’s are Quantum Fireball Plus AS. Can’t get warranty info on this one, Maxtor’s warranty site is down.
What is going on?
Do we have a Maxtor-killer virus or what?
Any suggestions?

wow. I am amazed that the drive lasted 2 years. My opinion of Maxtor is completely opposite from yours. When the 20GB drives first came out, I got 6 of them. I had to RMA 5 of them because they died within a couple of months. I bought them at different times and from different stores, so these were not all from the same batch. I ended up trading them for smaller WD drives and have had them ever since. THEN, idiot me decides to go back to Maxtor for my 2 60GB drives. I have had to RMA each twice. Horrible. At least I have the RMA to maxtor down to a science.

There's no virus that can kill hardware. It sounds like you are just having bad luck with the drives. Sorry to hear that. The RMA site will come back up. Until then, you can call 1-800-262-9867 for support.
