Gaming svchost generating errors

Hi all.

I have a small problem with my svchost.exe file...
It appears that the application generates errors and is terminated, in just about any session I run.

As soon as it's terminated, the following doesn't work anymore:
- copy/paste-ing (text and such)
- windows media player
- use java scripted internet pages
- follow any links that open a new window
- probably more, but I don't know yet.

I'm convinced that these problems are caused because the svchost.exe file is no longer running.
So can somebody please help me prevent the thing from crashing?
Has anyone had the same problem? Do you have any idea what caused this?

svchost is a generic process that alot of things run under.

What OS are you running?

Are you up to date on all patches and certain you are viris free?

I'm running win2000 pro, with the 4th service pack.

It might be a virus, but I can't be certain because the auto-updater I use (norton) ceases to function as soon as svchost is terminated.

The problem started yesterday (16th august) evening, probably while I was away from my computer (it was still on). I'm certain that nobody could get into my room.

I didn't have any service packs installed at that time yet. I installed it today, hoping that would get rid of the problem, but it didn't.

All in all, I think it's a virus I received through msn or kazaa or something like that. I was kind of hoping that the problem was well-known and somebody had a solution.

Monokip, I too run the same os as you, am virus free (according to Symantec anyway) run a Sygate firewall, and have as of very recently say the 14-15th, have been getting svchost errors too, though not so extreme as your problems (ie, copy/paste) and some weird happenings involving svchost and Sygate's firing agent (?), which caused Sy to fail on init, and spiriling down the rabbit hole even further, as I began attempting connecting to the net, I was online, logged into my isp, yet unable to find server for any site location, any anything, as if I were not online at all, and yet further still to lose all the dial-up connections. Sounds strange, I know, yet true. When I clicked my connection shortcut, I was quickly informed that "connection WTF?? could not be found" (ironically this connection is named WTF?? when a previous connection failed too and I was asking wtf had happened LOL) and I directly opened connections window, and guess what I found. Nothing. All the connections were gone, not even a trail of breadcrumbs to guide me. Was unable to create new connections, the next day was the same scenario, yet the day after (yesterday) all is again well with Win2kPro, we are chums again (minus one bsod at the hands of ntoskrnl.exe) all settings were again intact, moreover, the connections functioned properly.

Has any of that kind of bs happened, and btw did you happen to run Symantec's worm check program and have svchost go bezerk or worsen after? My svchost went insane directly after Sym's hunter/killer program pronounced my os healthy, so I am curious.

Had the same problem (as did my wife) and it is that worm that's making the rounds.
Go to Symantec site for the FixIt file and use the link there for the MS patch that will close the security hole that ;ets this worm in.

Look for a file called "msblast.exe" in your Windows/System32 folder. This is the payload file for the worm.

Cleaned up both our computers in about 15 minutes.

yeah.. that's what I was getting at.. but.. if ur anti-virus already got rid of it and ur still getting the problems, that means that the worm is in the process of infecting ur computer... and that was what was giving me problems.. so.. just get that security patch, and u should be fine

I'll lookinto the security patch. I'm not entirely certain that I have it.

I already ran teh fixblast.exe removal tool. It didn't find anything.

The blaster worm can cause svchost to crash.
If you have msblast.exe running as processes you have it.

The program didn't find the worm...
But the problem is fixed now that I installed both update 4 and the security patch. :S
