Why do webmasters make so much money?

I was looking at a career sheet and it said they make 120gs a year. Is that true and why do they make so much is it really deserved?

I'm a webmaster and haven't made 1 cent yet I spend $10/month +$30/year to run the site.

*Edit* Actually, I've got two sites (so the above number x 2).
The only thing I have received as far as compensation goes is that I have received a really nice pen in the mail trying to get me to buy a bunch of them.

One is a non-profit site and the other, well, I haven't made any profit lol!

well it isnt deseved if you are running alittle 2bit site with one page, but then you think about some that are running sites with 1000's of pages, multiiple server interaction, FTP, SQL, and junk, and the person has to be current with all the new technologies if the company wants to upgrage, when you look at the job for a large corporation, thats ALOT of work that has to be done

same here

yeah, especially when you run into credit card info, and security, and a global company, get some flash, all that jazz. the bigger the company, the more bucks. 120g sounds inflated though

I have a friend who's built himself a new system and paid for half a notebook (other half was graduation present) from making websites for people for less than 6 months.

Well also designing webpages you make 1000+ a job say 8 a month you can make 100g there. I could easily design 15 a month if I had the client base. And some designers/webmasters make 3000 a job to even 4000 a job for some of the really high high end sites you see out there. So 4000 dollars times 8 jobs a month times 12 months is 400 thousand to be split by a dev team of probably 3 or four guys. So that 120g is only if you are REALLY REALLY good at your job.

doesn't have to come from just BUILDING the website...

there's also hosting and on top of that troubleshooting...which is where the big bucks come in....

And not all of them make 120K. I'm sure there are some out there in rural areas on a local website making 25K. From there, there are people making every figure in between.

Telexen where in Idaho do you live?

Yes, alot of the people who develop the sites set up the servers to host them and continue to maintain them for a while to come.

You are paying for the knowledge mostly. But if you have ever set up a small site, you can appreciate the work that goes into a really big site.

I think the guys that make that kind of money deserve it. IMO
