What make video chip is on the machine (i.e. ATI, nVidia or other)? Some Dells also have integrated graphics. Let us know that and we can go from there. Jim

Does the nVidia Logo display when you run Direct 3D applications? If so, there is a known issue described here. Caused other problems for me until I disabled the nVidia Logo from display with Open GL:
NVIDIA Direct3D™ Logo: Under Windows XP, when the NVIDIA
Direct3D logo is enabled, certain Direct3D applications have rendering
problems. Symptoms can range from nothing being rendered to flickering.
Workaround Solution: Disable the NVIDIA Direct3D logo. You can follow
the steps below, if needed:
1 On your Windows desktop, right mouse click and select Properties.
2 Click the Settings tab and then click the Advanced option.
3 Click the tab that displays the name of your NVIDIA GPU.
4 Click the Direct3D Settings option from the menu on the left.
5 Uncheck (disable) the option named Display logo when running
Direct3D applications by clicking it.
6 Click Apply for the change to take effect.

If you were running a screen saver in Direct 3D, this could cause the screen to be blank instead. Jim

well, thanks, I looked at that setting and it was already set the way taht you said it should...

in the end, I just chose a different screen saver (although the default "pipes" one should work)

it appears to be working just fine now

thanks,

-Z
