Which wireless router for me?

I have a DSL connection that is connected to a "modem" for dsl in my computer. I want to share this connection over a wireless routeer with a laptop, and then wire in another computer. The wiring as it sits now is... phone line from the wall to the modem. I do have an open ethernet card. Does this make any sense? Any help would be great.

I use a Linksys BEFW11S4 Version 3 router that I use, works great with my sister's laptop w/ a d-link wireless card. Was really easy to setup too

is your modem internal or external? That is the confusing part to me. How does an internal modem wire in and get shared?

thats a router only i believe. not a combo. aquick trip to linksys would confirm that.

i would always go with linksys...some people like D link a fair amount. in fact compusa has a D link on sale today for 29.99 check the deals and coupons area for the compusa mid week ad thread.

Ok, to clarify, I'm trying to figure out which router works best with an internal modem. Do I wire from the wall to the router to the modem, or from the wall to the modem, then out of the 10/10 card to the router, then how does the networking part work. Or shoulf I save the hassle, buy an external modem and stick with the 54g wireless router.

Well, can't say about the internal modem part, but I'll recommend D-Link equipment. Recently went to wireless myself. I read reviews before shopping, and I wanted to go with 802.11G also, but the prices of 802.11B were just too tempting. The highest rated B equipment I read of was D-Link, and that's what I bought. DI-614+ router and DWL-520+ PCI card. (That "plus" is important! This is the enhanced 802.11B version - 22Mbps.)
And I've had D-Link before & trust them.

I installed & configured the router in a matter of minutes & had it up on my existing wired system. Installed the net card in one downstairs, about 35 ft away & down one level. Worked flawlessly on the first try.

As to speed, I can't find or measure any difference between wired & wireless machines, so I don't know what the real-world advantage of G would be. Both connect to the net perfectly, both return the same test results at DSL Reports. BTW, I'm on cable rated @ 768/128. I've got file & print sharing enabled & the wireless machine opens remote files just like they were local, and I can't judge the print speed since it's done before I can climb the stairs to the printer!

Anyway, I'd definately & strongly recommend D-Link !!!!

The easiest way is going to be to buy an external modem, bridge the connection to your router and off you go.

It can be done with an eternal modem, but you will need to add a NIC so that you can still connect to the router as well. You would add the cable from the NIC to the uplink or "in" port of your router.

As far as how you would "wire" it, it will always be from the wall, to modem, to what-ever. The modem is what converts your signal.

Any router should work with an enternal modem as long as you have it set up correctly. The brand doesn't matter if it has the features that you want. My personal prefrence is Linksys.

Hope this information helps.
