Is there such thing as "free Linux"? Question...

I downloaded Red Hat and had to pay extra money if I wanted to upgrade the system with patches. Which version of linux is totally free, the upgrades cost like 90 dollars per year.

Is there a difference with Red Hat Professional and downloading from linuxiso.org. I only had one chance for free upgrade of patches or is it a bug, or should the patches be free?

hello,
debain is completely 100 % free. apt-get all day long and don't worry about anything.

so is redhat - i am not sure why it says you need to pay, redhat professional does have optimizations and redhat hopes you will pay for it but you don't need too. redhat network is free, but you need to give them you email address every 60 days or so. you can pay for redhat network it is $60 per year.

The community run ones are totally free. Obviously commercial ones are going to want money some way, but you should still be able to run the up2date system on RH.
Gentoo is another free one, and very good IMO, but only if you know the basics on setting up a system, like compiling a kernel, partitioning/formatting disks, and setting up your X11 system.

Yeah, and redhat's up2date updates are mirrored if you get apt4rpm.

It's a free lunch alright, as is mandrake, debian, slack, pretty much everything but stuff like Lindows.

Most Linux distros are free, although not in the "professional" versions, which are totally complete. Some are excemptions such as SuSE which is unfortunately not free, the only free SuSE is the "live-evaluation" version which doesnt install itself to the HD, it only uses your RAM for you to test it. The only Linux distro besides SuSE that I am completely sure its not free (even the normal version) is Lindows: www.lindows.com costs about $59, pretty expensive but compared to XP its hell cheap! And it offers the best eye-candy in the Linux World, comes after SuSE which is also awesome IMO. Most of the Linux distros can be found in linux.org which is an awesome site I must say, really great, I just love the "open source" community. Think about what a great person and how much effort this guy called Linus Torvald made and spend such a lot of time to create what today is called "Linux". Yes, he is the creator as are ol' Bill is for Windows. And Linus did IMO a great job since it took so much effort and besides effort the competition of the most used OS in the world called "Windows" (90 % uses it! amazing, what a lack of options IMO) But Linus wanted to change this and he started very well IMO, and im sure Linux is going to grow as much as it can, but first the Windows mentality needs to be quit. As for Macintosh, I just love this OS. I have always been a person called a "Mac Person". I always liked Mac. I used an Apple, dont remember which one, but definetely form the 80's to first 90's. This tiny little box that worked black and white, but I must say it worked flawlessly compared to the Windows OS in that time. It had a desktop, since Windows was more based in Bill's genuine invention called "Dos" that he sold to IBM and now he is one of the most rich people in the world. But I really dont know why Macintosh didnt and havent grow that much as Windows since its so great. I just cant believe that most people used Windows 1.0 when my Mac beated that OS really bad! lol. But now I just dont use Mac for two reasons:
- Its hell expensive!
-It has compability issues (not OS issues, but programs are more for Windows than Mac, and those for Mac are very expensive. Ex: MS Word.

Thats why most people tend to try out Linux since it works in a normal "Windows" machine (not like Macs that only works in a special computers just for them, that is why IMO they are the most less problems and issues OS in the market). Linux is great for those that want to take a rest and get out from the MS world or just to really get outta there!

Mates, I really made this simple (well, it was supposed to be) post a huge one! But, as you can see, I enjoy typing, lol!

Thats all mates, my opinions
Regards

Free until SCO asks you to purchase a $1400 intellectual property license.

I got a complete copy of SuSE 8.2 Pro on CD off of eBay for less than $15. shipped. I'm assured that it's 100% GPL.
. Xandros is also neat and very easy to use.
http://www.distrowatch.com is a good site to use for following the distros. It has an excellent feature table and links to almost all available reviews.
