I need to set up a web server.

I have DSL and I would like to set up a web server to host my website(yet to be built) on. I have a spare computer that is decent(475amd k6-2 with 512mb). I have mandrake 9.1 installed on it at the moment. I dont care about os's I will reinstall or install a new one. How do I really go about doing this? I need something that is not too hard.

Well, easiest is using windoze and installing apache as a win32 app, IMO. Not as nice as apache in lunux, but works OK. I run apache on winxp at the moment, and it's simple to set up and configure.

Linux gurus could no doubt help you set up apache for mandrake. I did it once, but couldn't walk you through it at the moment.

Maybe ask in Linux forum for specific linux help.

Cheers
Mick

Well the thing is I dont really care about the os. Later on I would love to have a linux server but for now I would settel for a windoze server. I was at the apache site and like usual I was lost. Is there something that I can just download and blam go up or? I have to go to bed(aka fall off my chair onto my foton). If you could be so kind as to link me to what I need to download and what I need to do I would love that.

Thankz for all the help.

It ain't really a "blam it's on" kinda app, in either linux or windows.

You'll have to read through the link I linked above. Either that, or look for an easier to configure windows webserver (which will likley be less powerful than apache, but should work for now).

Let me google a bit...

Cheers
Mick

Hmm, that was easy - try Abyss web server. Looks to be very easy to set up in windows.

They have what looks to be a very easy walk though.

Hope this helps.

Cheers
Mick

edit: actually I just notice Abyss works just as easily with linux! Just go to the main company page and select "Getting Started", then the linux section, then follow the hints. looks very easy!!

With Mandrake 9.0 It's VERY easy to set up an apache webserver......... During the initial installation, you can install everything and it all works like it's supposed too. If your running only one website...... dump all the html files/images into the /var/www/html/ directory and your set Very easy to get running...... mysql can be installed and so can webmin and other apps ..... The only thing that ever really got me stuck was that I couldn't get mysql to start automatically..... (i still start it from webmin) ..... but I'm sure that isn't a real hard fix either.
