Apparently you are reading it correctly.
From the FAQ's page it states:

Quote:
Why do you report impossible operating system/server combinations ?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Webservers that operate behind a caching system, load balancer, reverse proxy server or a firewall may sometimes report the operating system of the intermediate machine. Hence reports of 'Microsoft/IIS on Linux' may indicate that either the web server is behind a Linux server that is acting as a reverse proxy, or has configured the Akamai caching system such that the first request to the site goes to one of Akamai's servers [which run Linux], or as in the case of www.walmart.com has been configured to send a misleading signature.

Not sure if that answers your question or not.

Maybe that was why we couldn't access the site last night.

Maybe the switched it to Linux to keep it from crashing under a heavy load when they get DDOS'd?

MS pulled the plug on the host server network for right now.

Akamai provides caching services for MS, thus the NetCraft survey is detecting the Akamai presence as the MS network in unavailable.

WindowsUpdate.com is still being hosted via Windows Server 2003. MS will not change this stategy until the next Windows Server version becomes available.

The MSBlaster DDoS worm attack would kill operations for nearly any operating system due to the flood of incoming connection requests. Only advanced, intelligent firewalling would be of any help, and then the upstream provider will still be hammered with the traffic. Switching to Linux would not solve these problems.

I know.

I was just pointing out the actual situation for those without networking knowledge that may visit this thread.

It has been a couple of years since I've done this, but if you search deep enough in the MS network, you can find sites running atop Linux and other non-MS operating systems.
