Outdoors Windows XP not updating right

Hi!

This is a crazy one! I'm helping a friend with his computer,,,HP 7915, using Windows XP Home (Whistler Build).

The problem is, we have downloaded all the updates, security patches and SP1 from the Microsoft web site (before it went **** up) and applies them all. I looked in the Add/Remove Program and I can see all the "Fixes" there, even the MS823980-x86-E fix. We also ran the Repair tool in "Safe Mode" from Symantec and it found and killed the MSBlaster Worm. We then ran the most current update of McAffess, and it found a slew of W32.Spybots and deleted them. So...I thought that everything was good to go...NOT!

After we rebooted, the computer came up with the NT Authority PRC error again after about an hour? So we went to GRC.com to test out ports and I can't believe it, but port 135 is still open! So I downloaded the MS823980-x86-E patch again and ran it again. Same result! Port 135 was showing it was still open and computer was shutting down every 20 mins??

So I went to Windows Update (not the autoupdate) and looked to see what critical files or patches were left to install...there was 0..So we had installed all patches!

I'm completely lost now?? I have no idea why it would install everything and yet not work? Is there anything that can be done?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

did you turn off the restore option before you killed the virus?

also do you have any firewall protection?

Yes, we did turn off "restore" and 'now' we have a firewall..

The thing that is really weird..is that all the patches are applied, yet..I'm still getting flooded?

Also, port 135 is still open?? I did this on a few other computers and just with the patch and fix everything was fine..but with this one it's just plain wierd??

I saw similar problems with a machine that was infected with te blaster worm. It could not get to any Internet site (among other problems).

I booted it in Safe Mode, ran the Symantec fixblaster tool, rebooted (with disconnected Internet), ran the related patches from CD, reboot, then all was fine.
