Can I use this for networking?

I was thinking of using a Netgear MR314 Wireless router 802.11b for sharing internet in the house. Is it possible to hook this up to my computer here and share it wirelessly to another computer in the house??

Yes, should be able to. How do you connect to the net at the moment? You many not need a wireless router if you already have a wired one.

Cheers

I use just 56K, but I would like to use this because we have 3 computers and I would also like it for file sharing. The phone lines don't go to the room where I want them to. I would also like to get into wireless 802.11b!!

Only dial-up? Sounds like a router wouldn't work for you to share internet, then. All you need is a WAP (wireless access point), and share the dial-up through an internet connection sharing app.

You could get that model, though, in anticipation of getting broadband later. The networking bit will still work fine, and you'll be able to share the dial-up with a proxy.

Cheers

The router part in tha model only shares a connection with DSL/cable modem. You can't plug a dial-up modem into it.

There may be a wireless router with a built-in 56K modem, so look for that, if you truly want to share from the router.

Cheers

Like thisone.

No idea how good it is. I just googled and this came up as supporting 56K modem connections (it has a serial port, so would need an external 56K modem as well).

You might find a wireless router with built in 56K. Netgear doesn't seem to have one (only a wired one)

Cheers

Oh, I was thinking of hooking my computer up to it instead of the cable model/dsl hook up. I have never had cable/dsl so i don't know how they work. I know that you cant hook up a 56k into it, im not that dumb.

Sorry, buzoid, didn't mean to imply you were.

You can get routers that can route dial-up though. But with the model you posted, you'd have to use a proxy to share internet, I'm afraid. If you weren't looking to get DSL or cable soon, and you still wanted to share dial-up from your PC wirelessly, might as well just get a WAP and not a router.

Cheers
Mick

You never answered my question about what a proxy is.
