friend's Compaq problem

Hi all,

My friend is having a problem with her Compaq computer. We're just troubleshooting right now, so I haven't looked at it yet. Here are the symptoms:

1. It will begin to boot when it's turned on, but then just freeze before it gets to Windows 98. There are no messages or anything.

2. She was having trouble with the CD-ROM before. It wasn't always reading.

3. If it does happen to work, she will be in the middle of something and it will just shut down to a black screen all of the sudden.

Any clues as to what this might be off-hand?

From that description that could be a range of things, From something as simple as
needing a format & Windows re-install, to bad Ram.
