virus!? or what?

hello, i am posting using my dad's account. my brother's laptop is having some problems. it is made by fujitsu and is running winxp. today he started up the laptop and opened netscape, then he got an hourglass, and nothing else happened. he turned off the computer, booted it up, and no programs would open up. just kept getting the hour glass. also, on startup, cannot access start button, or taskbar because when i put the arrow over the taskbar, i got an hour glass and couldn't click anything. there is only a small ammount of time that you can access it when it initially starts up. i can open msconfig and task manager within a matter of a few seconds. with those programs open, i can also access other programs, but i can't get onto the internet.

yesterday i installed norton 2002 onto the laptop. mcaffee virus software came with the laptop upon purchase. while installation of norton, an error message popped up saying it might be necessary to uninstall mcaffee. today, just after i was able to access programs on the laptop i uninstalled mcaffee. i was able to run norton anti-virus, which detected no viruses. one more thing, yesterday i figured out how to get through my firewall on the router and opened ports 28060-28062 and 28070-28081 to run a server on star wars jedi outcast.

well I would try booting it and then just leaving it for 10 mins or so. That should clear up your problem. Now unistall all antivirus software and run msconfig. Take out anything that you don't need to start windows. Now reboot and see if it occurs again. If not slowly add things. I think it is your antivirus software.

Not to make this sound stupid, but you cannot run two A/V's at the same time!

Are you sure McAfee was completely gone before you tried to run Norton?

Sometimes two A/V programs can be a big pain!

Well, You must uninstall McAfee before Norton can run.

I'm thinking that the McAfee may not completely uninstall since it came preloaded!! (Unless fdisk and such)

Uninstall Norton!

Try reinstalling the McAfee and update it to see what it says.

Sorry, but I have never delt with Norton.

Best I can do/offer!

ok, well everything seems to be working fine, the only problem at the moment is the wireless internet is down. the wireless router is made by netgear. it is an 802.11b access point, model ME 102. the main router is made by linksys.
