Welcome to TechIMO frank.
in LILO, Linux-SMP is the SMP capable kernel (use this if you have more than 1 cpu chip in the system, HT chips don't count)
Linux is just the normal kernel.
As to the apps:
Grip
Mozilla
Fluxbox (I think thats in there)
GKrellm (I hope thats there)
Everybuddy (if you use KDE, I would go with kopete though)
Imagemagick (may not be for you, but it lets you do things to image files from the command line, which I think's cool)
Nmap (port scanner, you may have no use for it, but I'll plug it as the windows version sucks, and this is pretty much the industry standard)
eroaster for GUI CD burning, better than xcdroast by far, and more comparable to the likes of Nero in windows.
Nedit for editing program code in a GUI. Nice features when I get sick of Vim (please don't hate me guys

)
and of course: The GIMP
For office suites, OO.org does ok, but there are others such as Koffice and GNOME office (abiword, gnumeric etc)
BTW I don't use mandrake, I'm just giving you a couple of apps I use.
