Brown discoloration next to core

I was putting my processor (XP 1700) into my new mobo tonight and noticed some discoloration on the wafer right next to the core. I thought maybe it was excess thermal paste at first but it wouldn't come off with alchol. Is this something I should be concerned with. I didn't have a chance to get everything back together tonight so I don't know if it will boot. It was starting up on the other board though.

My guess is something foreign ...( i.e. adhesive , soda, etc.) got on the processor prior to installation and burned and discolored due to temps... I would not worry about it if you were not having problems before you took it out...
good luck just in case...

All my cpu's have that. Its discolored around the die from the heat. The pcb the die is on has a non conductive layer which is like a wax kinda. It discolors witht the heat. Nothing wrong-its typical. Any used cpu shows this.

Same here.

While were on the subject, does anyone know what an overheated / burnt CPU looks like?

Ok thanks guys. Just wanted to make sure it wasn't toasted.

And good question woodbutcher. I'd like to know myself. If anyone has a pic of a fried CPU, could you post it.

...I've never had that coloring on ANY of my CPUs...including a fried (overheated) 1800+ and a 1600+.

I've had, mostly away from the cpu core. Brown spot looking like it was burned. Happened when the hsf came off the cpu after shipping cross country. User turned the pc on, a few seconds later on the pc would not come on at all. Shipped back to me, changed the cpu, all is fine.

Btw, on the inside of the chip, not on top where the core touches the hsf.

You talking about the die or the PCB? Im talking about the PCB. The die being dark is def BAD. LOL. But I have yet to pull a used AMD OR P3 without some heat marks. Only when BRAND new they look all nice and even colored. Im not saying near black here-just darker colored than rest of pcb is.

Would overclocking have anything to do with it looking kinda burnt. I guess if it still boots up its ok.
Hey engracio do you buld PC's? Did the buyer have to pay for that fried CPU?
