Wireless Home Network

I just bought a wireless router. I wired in my main desktop and am attempting to setup my laptop which has a wireless card. I cannot get the laptop to connect. It recognizes the router's signal, but will not connect to it. I have XP and it is set to auto connect. I have disabled the encryption on both machines. Any suggestions?

I have an Atheros card in my Toshiba laptop and a Linksys router. The Atheros is recognizing the signal, but when I try to connect it won't. I have been using the XP auto settings.

The Linksys is a WRT54G. It is supposed to be backward compatible with a/b. The Atheros is 802.11a/b.

In the default XP settings make sure you check the box that says "Allow me to connect with unsecured networks" (or words to that effect).

The IP on the wireless is set at 00.00.00.0. I have the box set to detect the IP automatically? I have checked the box to allow hookup to unsecured network. In the status box I show a number of sent signals, but almost no received signals even though it has detected the router signal and it appears to be very strong-I have the laptop in the same room as the router to make sure I have the signal.

Have you set the SSID on the laptop? It sort of like a Workgroup name. If you name it say for example "Test" on the router you have to name it "Test" on the laptop too. I think it's in the TCP/IP settings or it might be in the Device Manager settings. Done that long time ago with a wireless setup. Might want to check that out.

Yes, the SSID is set the same as the router. It detected it automatically when I searched for signals.
