Systems soundcards

i bought a soundcard. creative techs 128 pci card. very inexpensive, but what research i found reflected that it was a good card for what i needed. i've had a number of problems trying to get it to accept my microphone input. i have been told that my windows xp should have found the card on startup and automatically loaded the drivers. it never did that. in fact the system saw the card, but i had to change my audio configurations to select it over my onboard sound. i finally got my microphone to work but it's mostly static. i'm thinking of eating the $15.00 i spent on the card at microcenter and buying a newer, pricier card. any suggestions?

I don't see why your card wouldn't work..

but if you are looking for a good card..

get the Trutle Beach Santa Cruz Sound Card...

it's abour $40 at Newegg.com

Did you go into to your boards BIOS and disable the onboard sound? If not, do so and remove any software the it was using.
You could be running into resource conflicts.
Also it helps people help you if you list the OS and hardware such as mobo and CPU.

It is virtually impossible a soundblaster card could be incompatible with your system...more likely it is a conflict with your previous setup...going from onboard to PCI can cause some problems if not done correctly...
As stated before you need to uninstall sound drivers and any programs that were included in the original install of the onboard sound...
Then the Bios needs to be changed and have onboard sound disabled...(in the bios not the system device manager,,,)
I would also change the PCI slot you are using now...try a different slot in case it is conflicting with something else...usually not a good idea to use the PCI slot closest to the AGP slot.

Go into the BIOS and disable the onboard audio. Then bootup and go the the device manager an remove all devices related to sound, make sure to check the "other devices" if its listed. The shut down and reboot.

Go here to download the latest drive for XP: http://www.americas.creative.com/sup...s=10&subcat=17

ok

i went into bios and reset the pci preferences to manual. i then disabled all audio and installed the driver for windows xp. my system recoginzed the card and i now have an imput level. i'm currently working on why cool edit pro will not allow me to play back what i've recorded.......this pc thing seems much more difficult than the apple "plug and play" that i'm so very used to!!!! sorry for the comment, but i've been on the mac side for 9 years and am starting to learn....
