IEXPLORE.EXE problem in task manager

i check my windows task manager (using cntrl+alt+del) pretty often and i keep on coming across this problem. i usually have more than two IEXPLORE.EXE processes running. sometimes up to about six. each one takes up at least 5 mb of my memory so this is a really unwanted problem. i close all programs and windows but this doesnt solve anything. i dont kno if this is a problem i can solve under Internet Explorer or through my OS. HELP!
...ok. i just realized that it might be because my IE 6 freezes up once in a while so i have to force end that task. but even so, is there a way to get rid of those processes after i force end task (without manually going into task manager, etc.)?

Windows 2000 Pro
Tyan Trinity KT-A (socket A) motherboard - 1GHZ AMD Thunderbird
Internet Explorer 6

I have this happen, too. I end up with iexplore.exe in my processes, but I haven't opened a browser. Slows down my computer and I have to go in and manually end the processes all the time. Don't understand what is making this occur. Please help.
