Systems Motherboard won't read floppy drive

Motherboard won't read floppy drive. Yes the floppy drive worked before. And the cable is installed nice and tight and in the right position. I have a Shuttle AV42 that I just bought. I have not been able to get it to recognize the floppy drive. The floppy light stays on always (that usually means the data cable is in the wrong way but it's not, and I've even tried it in all possible permutations). ALSO, the computer freezes occasionally upon startup, unless for some reason I am able to get to Windows. I've tried booting without the hard drive connected to see if it's a Windows problem or not, and it still does not recognize the floppy drive and it still freezes up.

Thanks for any suggestions, I just spent $100 on this and I'm feeling like *$%&!#$%!!!

Actually, I've been having the same problem with my AMD K6(2). I don't think it's the floppy drive, but then again I am not sure what the problem is. In my situation, the drive was working before, but now the light just stays on all the time. I tried putting the cable the other way around, tried using a floppy cable that I know works, and tried using two other floppy drives that I know work. I also tried reinstalling the floppy drivers by removing them from the Device Manager and letting Windows auto-detect them at startup, but that didn't work. Maybe you can try what I've tried and hope that one of them work, morphineboy. If you're lucky, your situation is a lot better than mine and one of these methods work for you.
