DUMB QUESTION about servers

my freind says that he can run a counterstrike server out of his house and it wont be laggy or slow because his internet connection is a secure connection and his cable modem is uncapped... wat the crap is he talking about and will it work well if we have 16 people playing in it

Uncapped cable is generally a misnomer, but he may have a fast connection, perhaps even a business class package.

Anyway, yes, he can run a CS server on his broadband connection. I am not an online gamer, but I would anticipate he could not serve more than a few players without serious lag on a standard cable connect.

secure connection - he thinks he's smart and means firewalled

uncapped means he is bypassing the limits his cable internet provider sets on an account...giving much faster speeds. The downside to this is if you're TRULEY uncapped, not just unlimited, the provider will catch you within HOURS and remove your service.

He's arrogant, but yes his server will run fine with that many players on CS.

Yes he can run it outa his house, provided he can open the correct ports and stuff. As for lagging - depends on lots of stuff, including speed of his server, how many hops to get to his server from another PC, what speed his ISP lets him have, etc, etc, etc.

Only way to find out is to try.

Cheers
Mick

You will have to drop a google search, as discussions concerning the actual uncapping process for cable modems can be considered hacking (not allowed at TIMO).

Most home users are capped, and the common cap hack no longer works for many service providers. Your ISP account bill will likely list your rated connect speed.
