Outdoors svchost problem

Hi.. I'm new to this board. I've reently beeen having some major problems. First off, I'm running Windows 2000 Pro. I havent run any updats for a little less than a year. I recently found a virus on my system which is the W32.Blaster.Worm or something of that sort. I was able to get rid of the virus, but now my system has been a little off beat. It is fine when I initially boot up, but then after I am running windows for about 15 minutes, or when I connect to my ISP (through a phone line) I get a message which says that svchost.exe has created problems and will close. Well, after that happens, it seems there are no problems, BUT, I am unable to open certain sites (such as windows update, access to my credit card accounts, cell phone accounts, etc.) Also I am unable to do some random tasks such as copy, paste, drag/drop, access folders through windows explorer, link word documents, and many other problems. I have been trying to download the windows service pack 4, but there continues to be a connection problem after the svchost error occurs. I was hoping someone would have some sort of idea of what there is I could do. Thank you.

-Matt

You still have the virus. Read this other TechIMO thread to get rid of it. http://www.techimo.com/forum/t75868.html

Thanks for the tip... but I tried looking for it under my registry, but the file is not there.. I'm still having the same problems.. I'm downloading the service pack 4 from a direct source that i found on this forum.. I've run the anti-virus again and it isnt finding it. Any more suggestions before I install the service pack?

Extra Tip

If you have a firewall installed you can block svchost while you update from windowsupdate.com.

I wrote about this on The Junk Drawer. You can catch that report (and links to assorted free and shareware firewalls) http://Junkie.journalspace.com/?entryid=347

It also includes links to online virus scanners and free scanners that will remove it once you're updated.

Microsoft also has a patch you can apply to prevent reinfection.
