Xp page fault error when installing onto toshiba laptop
Basically, I am trying to install windows XP Pro onto my Toshiba satellite pro 4600 (Currently running Win98 SE). What happens is that as it starts to reboot during the install (either directly from the XP install CD, or once the files have been copied from within windows98 SE and the computer is rebooting into XP), it goes to a blue screen saying:
"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA"
And a whole lot of other text, with the final line:
***STOP: 0x0000050 (0xFCB387E3, 0x00000000, 0x8080E70C, 0x00000000)
I get exactly the same fault every single time. I have tried numerous reformats, clean installs, installs from within win98, installs from DOS, installs from boot, and nothing seems to work!
I have searched on google and on the microsoft site, and i found some pages about installing new hardware, which was not relevant, or display drivers, which is also not relevant, as i am using the most current drivers in 98, and have not had the chance to install any drivers for XP. Please can someone help, and let me konw if there is any way to get past this error so I can install XP! Thanks very much,
Cocksy

Is your laptop certified compatible with Windows XP? Toshiba should be able to answer that for you. If it is compatible... Memory error?? This is a head scratcher.

Thanks for trhe quick reply, but yeah, it is compatable - there are drivers for it in XP on the toshiba site, and a page in the FAQ's which says that this model (Satellite Pro 4600) is compatable with XP! I'm not sure what to do next!
If it were a memory error, how would i check for it (it would have to be in win98) as have never had any "memory errors" in win98? Thanks,
Cocksy

This might sound stoopid, but, Windows 98 requires much less memory to run than Win XP.

I think ive got just about enough for xp - its got 128, and when i ran the 'test compatability' with the xp installer it didn't say that i didn't have enough memory, so i hope its not that - especially as laptop memory isnt cheap!!

it does sound like it might be a memory error. memory that works "FINE" in windows 98 may or may not work for XP, especially during installation. you might want to try a memory tester

No, it doesnt mention any files in particular - just the error code. Why, what were you thinking it may be?
