Win2K Problem: CSRSRV.dll and .exe

When downloading the latest Win2K security patch (under microsoft security bulliten MS03-026), I discovered that it requires at least service pack 2 to function. Additionally, I found several machines on the LAN had never been updated with any service packs. In the process of putting on SP1 and SP2, I got the error that CSRSRV.dll and CSRSS.exe could not be found. Ignoring this error and continuing the install completely crashes the computer- it now endlessly reboots. I couldn't find these files on a working (updated computer) and pulling them off the windows CD seems to wipe all your settings (network, users, accounts, etc.). So, does anyone know how to fix this problem. Found nothing at MS site.

Thanks,
Louise

This seems to be related to the Blaster worm that just got announced. If you try to update from Microsoft after the worm is active, it apparently messes with your system, when you try to install a service pack. In some cases, finding the file (csrsrv.dll) on a computer that is cleaned from the blaster worm, booting to DOS, and copying the file to the c:\win2k\sys32, allows you to then reboot to windows. You must then clean off the worm, then try to patch with the Windows Sec. Patch. (Symantec has a removal tool on their site.) However, some of computers won't boot to DOS, so I can't say this will always work. Don't boot from the Windows install disk, as this seems to re-install Windows 2K, and then it hangs.
