Processor V-core level question

I've got a Athlon XP 2400+ overclocked to 2.3 gigs. It's stable but I've set the V-core to 1.8 volts to achieve it. I'm wondering if this is too high to sustain without burning out the processor. Also, the ASUS Probe utility shows my V-core as 1.86 volts, when I've set it at 1.8 in the BIOS. What's up with that? Any insights?

It's not going to burn up the processor *quickly* by running it at a higher voltage than it's rated for, but it will shorten the life of your CPU (there's no telling by how much). It should last as long as you'll need it either way.

It should be noted that raising the voltage to the CPU will increase the temperature of the CPU, even if you don't increase the frequency (system bus)

Some ASUS boards boost the VCore anyway. If you want a lower setting, set it lower. 1.86v is safe anyway, and its about the highest you should take it. The heat is normsally what kills it, and as Telexen says, the heat will go up with the voltage, so keep it as low as you can. for example, if you're only gaining 50 or so mhz for raising the voltage 0.05v, then I wouldn't bother.

Yep, the asus board I have runs the core at 1,85V minimum. If I set it otherwise via jumpers it will only increase.
Eg. if I set the vcore to 1.8V via jumpers, it will be 2.00V. Changing the vcore from bios has no effect.
