Couple of things...
XP has native support for many scanners (for example, my Umax Astra 600S... even though the Umax scanner software is not XP compatible). What scanner are you using?
Multi-boot PCs normally requires you to partition your hard drive into the same number of partitions as the number of OSes you want to use. For example, we have a dual boot W98se/WinXP Pro. W98se lives on the C: drive (FAT32) and XP on the D: drive (NTFS).
Dual boot is easiest if you install the older OS first, then install the newer OS on the second partition. If you don't do this, then you will need to acquire some multi-boot management software instead of using the native multi-boot support that Win OS provides.
