HELP! HD formatted, lost LOADS, how i restore?

My dad formatted my sisters harddrive which I was using to store loads of stufff coz my HD was full. He did a full format and the OS is XP. Is there any programs I can use to get this stuff back?
Preferably free ones coz im very poor
