Error: NT Athority

A friend of mine cannot get on the internet. He uses windows XP. When he tries to use internet exporer or get his e-mail the window opens up and shuts down and gets error mesage (NT Atority). Is this from one of M$'s security updates or what?

Does this mean he got a virus and/or got hacked? Assuming the patch will solve his problem, how can he get the patch if he can't open interntet explorer?

Thanks I downloaded the path for him. From what I've been learning I think this will work.
