Kids Gb Network Speeds

For a home office need, I've just bought a Gb switch and installed Gb NICs on the server and the workstations(4) that require them. Although I was not expecting speeds exactly at 1 Gb/s, I'm only getting sustained txfr speeds of 250-300 Mb/s (32-38 MB/s). Is this the "true" speed of Gb networking, or is there something I can do to improve throughput?

Server NIC: Intel PRO/1000 MT Server Adapter
Workstation NIC: Intel Pro/1000 MT Desktop Network Adapter
Gb Switch: Netgear GS108 (8 port Gb Switch)

Thanks.

You can achieve faster. Here's a good read which show how raising the Windows default MTU (1500) can have a good results ...
