computer takes ages to start up ,nearly 5 minutes.I have a very fast processor AMD athlon 1GHz 256 Mb RAM. When I first bought the computer I booted up so quickly it was amazing. I also have the same problem during shut down,it hangs for a while before responding.Email is also slow to start up. I only have a 40Gb hdd and fragment and clean the disk bi monthly. I remove all temporary internet files.I have deleted all cookies but then enabled cookies from the internet options dialouge box. I have scanned for virus but my sytem detects none. Its's virus free,I use N.Symantec.Is there software I can download to pinpoint where the why the speed is hampered? Can I do a health check? What is the best way to get the speed back?

OS _ windows 2000 professional.

Hmm..do you have alot of programs that start up when you PC boots up? you might check this little program out Startup Control v2.8 by Mike Lin. and posable run ad-aware and see if that helps any.

If you have not done so I would suggest downloading Spybot and Adaware. Update them and run them both. It should clean alot of crud out that is taking up processes.

You can get them both at download.com in the most popular downloads.
